Pediatric Eye Exam
Pediatric eye exams play an essential role in keeping your child’s eyes healthy. Often, children don’t realize they have a vision problem because they may think everyone sees the way they do. Getting regular eye exams for your child can help identify vision issues early on before they negatively affect their performance in school. At ProEye Vision Center, we start seeing children right before they go to elementary school (around age 5).
What should I expect during a pediatric eye exam?
A pediatric eye exam is designed to evaluate both your child’s vision and eye health. These exams can uncover vision problems that may go undetected during a school screening. During a pediatric eye exam, our eye doctors will ask questions about your child’s health and perform a series of tests based on your child’s age and developmental stage. Some common vision problems we can diagnose during an exam include nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, strabismus (crossed eyes), amblyopia (lazy eye), and color blindness. If we detect an issue, we can recommend the best treatment options to prevent complications in the future.
When should I take my child to the eye doctor?
According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), children should see an eye doctor at 6 months old, again at three, and once more before starting school. School-aged children should see an eye doctor at least once a year. At ProEye Vision Center, we offer eye exams for school-aged children starting at around age 5. We encourage parents to bring their children in for an eye exam before they start elementary school. This first eye exam with our experts helps us catch any issues that could impact learning and growth.
